Junior Research Scientist, University of Toronto
Joan Almost, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor (CLTA) in the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto and a post-doctoral fellow in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing at Ryerson University. Her research is in the area of workplace relationships in clinical care and their impacts on nurses and patients. Her dissertation research focused on the development and testing of a theoretical model examining the antecedents and consequences of intragroup conflict among nurses in acute care settings. As the next step in deepening our understanding of the factors and situations that underlay work group conflict, her Post-Doctoral work will build on the findings from her dissertation through the development and testing of an intervention to effectively manage and prevent conflict. Dr. Almost was recently invited by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario to Co-Chair a panel developing a Best Practice Guideline for “Conflict on Nursing Teams”. She is also co-leading a study examining the work environment of correctional nurses and the development of an educational intervention for nurses working in provincial correctional settings. During her doctoral work, Dr. Almost received funding from five provincial and national agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Nurses Foundation.
